Description:

Konjac gum is extracted from the root of konjac, a perennial plant of the genus Amorphophallus Araceae. It's main ingredient is glucomannan. The Chinese have been using konjac as food for over 2000 years. The FDA has permitted konjac gum as a food addtive. Konjac gum has been claimed has the effect of lowering cholesterol, blood sugar and blood lipids and weight loss.

 

Thanks to the property of thickening anbd water-retaining, konjac gum is widely used in the food industry. One might find konjac in flour products, meat and dairy products or beverages. In meat products, konjac is used to prevent water loss to extend shelf life. In jellies, Konjac can be used to make the jellies more chewy and elastic.
